Jerry Bowen graduated from Arkansas State University in 1964. He was the Army ROTC Cadet Corps Deputy Commander, and commissioned as a 2nd LT at graduation. Through the years of his active duty service he continued to further his military education that included the Army Command and General Staff School and the Army War College. His assignments included command and staff positions such as Platoon Leader, Company Commander,  Battalion Commander, and Division and Corps level responsibilities. Jerry served 3 tours in Vietnam in various command positions. His awards and decorations include, The Legion of Merit w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Stat Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal w/ 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster,, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Service Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, Army Pathfinder Badge, and The Pentagon DA Staff Service Badge. After 25 years of service, Jerry retired in 1989. He later began a career with the Veterans Administration working with several National Cemeteries retiring again in 1998. Jerry had other involvements with the Military Officers Association of America, the Jonesboro Kiwanis Club, and the Jonesboro JC's. In 1995 Jerry was inducted into the Arkansas State University ROTC Hall of Fame. In 1997 he received the Arkansas State University Distinguished Alumni Award.
