Col. Ruby N. Stanfield

Description:

Col. Stanfield graduated from Fordyce High School in 1955 and enlisted in the US Army Reserves in 1957 while pursuing her degree in nursing. Upon completion of her nursing degree in January 1959, she was commissined as a second lieutenant in the US Army and initially station in Ft. Sam Houston. In September 1964 she was transferred to south Vietnam as one of the first nine nurses to be sent in support of the excalating conflict. In 1973 she left active duty and joined the US Army Reserves again. Col. Stanfield was activated for 6 months and assigned to Ft. Chaffee in support of the Vietnam Refugee Settlement Program. 

  Col. Stanfield retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1993 after 20 of service with that organization and retired from the US Army Reserves as a Colonel 1996 after 39 years of service.

Her awards include; Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Overseas Service Medal.
